Applique Process for quilt?
Author: admin
I am embarking on a new hand applique quilt and have seen a few techniques such as templates and using a lightbox for tracing the pattern onto the block. Do any of you have an opinion on which is best and why?
I’m lazy, and tracing a pattern on a light box is easier than finding or making a stencil or templates, so I do that whenever I can. Plus, I can easily photocopy it larger or smaller if I need to. If the background fabric is too dark to use on a light box, then use a stencil if all blocks need to be the same, and use templates if some variation among blocks is acceptable or even desirable.
If you don’t have a lightbox, there are some homegrown alternatives. The simplest is to tape your pattern and fabric up to a sunny window, although I’ve heard of people who quilt at night and use their (clean!) tv screens for a lightbox. If you have a table with a glass top, put a lamp under it and trace away. Or, if you have a table that takes leaves, open it partway, put a piece of plexiglass across the gap and a lamp under it – voila!
Hand applique can be very satisfying – hope you enjoy it!
