Easy Baby Quilts & Quilting Tips
Archive for August, 2009
I’ve seen quilt instructions where they talk about quilting in the ditches. I know that is where the different materials are sewed together, but can they be quilted just using a regular straight stitch on a sewing machine or do you need a special quilting machine? I have hand quilted, and using a sewing machine would certainly be a different look from that.
You can use a regular sewing machine to quilt your quilt but there are a few things to consider.
If you’re doing a larger quilt, the bigger the space under the arm of your machine, the easier it will be to get to the center of the quilt. Also, you need to maneuver all of that fabric around and it helps to place your machine on a large table in a left corner. This way the excess fabric that has already gone through your machine or is to the left of the machine will be supported. You may want to drape the rest of it over your shoulder.
If you’re quilting in straight lines, a walking foot attachment on your machine will help move the fabric through more evenly. You may need to mark your straight lines using a removable pencil, marker, or chalk. Also, check into a seam guide that is just a bent bar that fits on the pressure foot. You set the width and just run the bent part of the bar along your last seam line.
If you want to create curves, a darning foot or free motion foot will make it much easier to see what you’re doing. You need to drop or cover your feed dogs, too. Free motion quilting is beautiful, but it takes some practice. You’re essentially drawing by moving the paper instead of the pen. Special gripper gloves can help with this, too.

I went and entered a Quilting Contest. I have to make a 30 x 30 quilt, and use some of he material they supplied me with "NO instructions". The material is one of blue background with purple and orange butterflies. one is green with small whitish flowers, one if of different colours of vines..reminds me of fireworks "it’s so hard to find something with them colours" how to make it all come together and match? Which would be a wall hanging. It’s for a lily fest, so What I really want is a scene quilt, something that I can use on my wall after. We can use any embelishments we want, so I want to use buttons, lace, ribbon embroidery, and ribbon. I’m thinking of making some flowers out of fabric and basting to the background peice, some of the petals, with some still not sewed on, so it goes over the border and looks 3d lily maybe?
Please, I need to know how to make fabric flowers, and need templates.. can’t find a thing online.. been everywhere.
Perhap colouring pages, please help
Go to the library, there are books with dozens of patterns for everything. I checked out a book once that had at least 50 different flower patterns and templates for applique, but I dont remember the name, it was a very thick book though. At the library you can thumb through until you find what you’re looking for. If you dont find what you’re after in the quilting section, look for books about flowers and photocopy the ones you like to use as patterns, try the childrens’ section also. The library is a very handy place!! (The book may have been "1000 Quilt Blocks" by Maggie McCormick, I was on Ebay and that one looked like the one)
I had this thought in my head i know its probably not original but if its not that is ok maybe someone can show me how. i want to take pieces of my daughters outgrown baby clothes you know the special things and make a quilt. now i was thinking of a bigger square as the back ground and a smaller square in the middle with the baby material. now i have watched quilting shows and they just usually put sides on the square to make it look like a bigger on the bottom but is it ok to do it the way i said? oh and i have never made a quilt but have watched my mom for years and no i cant ask her for help. Thanks for any help.
that is very sweet!
Ok now what i have done is this:
say you have a dress or socks?
or hats? Now as painful as it is to cut them you have to depending on the size of the block.
say you have a flowered dress? the block has to be a solid color in contrast to set off the dress piece.
applique it to the block
cut the dress in half if you want to save the whole dress just make a quilt with colored blocks and use the front of the dress on the quilt.
then use the back on it too. .
plus a hat & her socks and her baby cloth shoes…
like a image of her [but it is only her clothes. ]
also you can make some nice wall hangings from them little quilts

I’m looking for a book that would contain quilting, embroidery, making potpourri, candles, soap, use of natural dyes etc (with basic instructions). Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Readers Digest has a crafts book, cost 25+ yrs ago $45 has loads of traditional crafts with the basic instructions in it.
Hastings BookStores has a large section of crafts books. Was browsing a few weeks ago at the local store!
