Easy Baby Quilts & Quilting Tips

Years ago I had a book that showed how to machine-sew a quilt. You used long strips of fabric, and you sewed the quilt strips, batting and backing all together at once. You basted the first "set" of top, batting and backing together as a long strip. The next set was laid "inside out" on the first strip, then sewed, and then turned "right side out", pressed, and the unsewn side basted. This was repeated until the quilt was the desired width. The strips were made of large squares of fabric in the example I saw.

Does anyone know the name of this technique, and perhaps the location of a website that gives instructions? I’m afraid I haven’t explained it very clearly, but I thought if anyone out there has made a quilt like this, they will know what I mean.

P. S. This apparently is NOT "strip" quilting; I’ve looked at the web about that, and it isn’t what I’m looking for.

Thanks!

This is called "quilt as you go" and there are several different variations. There’s a quick, one page illustrated instruction sheet here:

There are several books that teach variations of this method. I’ve used one called Divide and Conquer, by Nancy Smith and Lynda Milligan.

They demonstrated one of the variations on Simply Quilts, on HGTV. You can view that portion of the episode on the HGTV website. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a link directly to the video, but here’s how you find it. Go to the Simply Quilts video center on HGTV, here:

In the "video search" box, type "divided quilting." You’ll get a bunch of possibilities, but the top four choices are the four segments demonstrating the entire technique.
